DESIGN CHRONICLES: PART 1

A Journey of Tradition and Tranquillity: The Sejpal Family Home

Area: 2500 SQFT
Location: Andheri West, Mumbai, India

“Payal, I want a Home… that resonates us, our culture, our values and of course the Mandir takes centre stage as we have many rituals, we perform throughout the year. Swing is a MUST!

Being a Gujarati myself, I am intimately familiar with the functionality of our homes. To ensure that the design aligns perfectly with the needs of each family member, I met with each individual and asked them targeted questions. This process formed the foundation of the design. With a clear vision of how the space would transform, I felt a surge of excitement because I knew they would adore the final result. And indeed, they did!

Conclusion: A cozy home with the right functions and a colour palette of WOOD, METAL in a play of neutral colours.

Step through the threshold of the Sejpal family home, and you’ll find yourself immersed in a world where culture, comfort, and craftsmanship converge. Each element meticulously chosen each detail thoughtfully curated, to create a space that not only reflects the family’s heritage but also embraces modern functionality with open arms.

The story unfolds from the very beginning – the entrance. Here, tradition reigns supreme, as a vibrant green wall welcomes guests, flanked by a shoe rack that doubles as a seat, in adherence to the age-old custom of leaving shoes outside the home. The door, clad in rich walnut skin and adorned with motifs reminiscent of traditional Gujarati homes, serves as both a guardian and a symbol of hospitality.

Despite constraints in space planning, ingenuity thrives. The structure’s limitations only serve to fuel creativity, as evidenced by the seamless integration of elements from the entrance into the lobby, setting the tone for the entire house. Walnut wood, with its subtle hues and natural grains, becomes the cornerstone of the design language, complemented by brushed gold accents that lend a touch of understated luxury.

But it’s the mandir that truly steals the spotlight, holding pride of place as the heart of the home. Here, innovation meets reverence, with a collapsible door crafted from brass, adorned with motifs that pay homage to Gujarati heritage. This motif, elevated to hero status, finds its way onto various surfaces throughout the house, from engraved wood panels to intricately carved doors, infusing each space with a sense of sacredness and tradition.

The swing, strategically positioned by the window, becomes a sanctuary of serenity, its ornate rods adding a touch of nostalgia to the modern interior. With no backrest, it invites occupants to bask in the sunlight and revel in the beauty of nature, perfectly capturing the essence of Gujarati hospitality and warmth.

As we journey through the master room, the son’s room, and the parents’ quarters, each space unfolds as a reflection of its occupants’ personalities and needs. Customized to perfection, with only the doors carrying the design language inside, every room becomes a sanctuary of comfort and tranquillity, where tradition meets modernity in perfect harmony.

In the end, the Sejpal family finds themselves enveloped in a home that not only meets their expectations but exceeds them in every way. Their vision of a cozy, culturally rich abode has been brought to life, creating a space where memories will be made and traditions cherished for generations to come.

Her meticulous attention to detail ensured that every aspect of our home was tailored to perfection, seamlessly blending our diverse needs and desires into the fabric of our living space. From fulfilling our son’s whimsical requests for his room to honouring my in-laws’ expectations for a sacred temple corner, and even accommodating my own specifications for the kitchen layout, 7Nirvana left no stone unturned.

Beyond their expertise in design and construction, their unwavering support and care throughout the entire process were truly invaluable. They made what seemed like an overwhelming endeavour remarkably easy, guiding us every step of the way with patience and understanding.
