“The essence of interior design will always be about people and how they live. It is about the realities of what makes for an attractive, civilized, meaningful environment, not about fashion or what’s in or what’s out. This is not an easy job.” – Albert Hadley
There are many tutorials to help you design your home and many lists on why you need an interior designer – the understanding of this “why” in a few words is much summarised by Albert Hadley here and let us explain why it’s not an easy job whilst we have so much fun doing it!
We buy a home with many aspirations and we as designers fulfil all your aspiration with the much-needed technical support. This technical knowledge is the training we acquire in our school which intends for us to have this ability to design correctly with the technical aspects of engineering + sustainability & economic viability. We are trained to think in 3D!
Understanding Who You Are
Designing your home is a want but let’s highlight the need first. We decide to buy a home and design it when we have reached a certain milestone; an achievement that needs fulfilling.
We listen and hear every bit of detail. We go through your desires in depth to understand who you are and where you want to be, how you want to position yourself in this world once you have achieved this milestone. Your home defines you and we bring out your characteristics in your home – that is your personality! That’s who you are!
The Vision Board
The clients have already gathered many references for how their home should look – we go through all images and make a vision board, technically a Mood board.
We create the brief of all the functions that must be seamlessly flowing throughout the home and make the necessary plans and layouts and eventually 3D visuals and walk-through of how the home will look. This is how we come closer to the vision for the client.
Being Resourceful
There are materials and colours which you may prefer that resonate with you, we help you gather these materials in the right form to get the whole vision right. Being resourceful is the most important as there are times we are challenged, if we don’t have the right vendors and contractors, our designs will never see the light of day. A bank of contractors and vendors for all kinds of execution in design is a must for us and we already have them in our team.
For example, one of our clients bought a house in a high-rise building with a view of the sea link in Mumbai. She wanted seamless windows that would not obstruct the view. We made sure the windows were designed with large glass panes, the correct configuration to withstand the wind pressure on the high floor and UV protection to achieve natural light as well as at the same time making it economically viable.
Another client’s brief was as simple as I want a New York styled apartment as they lived there for many years, and it made them feel at home. So how did we achieve it? The theme of the house was stark white and wood with black elements and we asked them to give us their best memories from back then. Those memories were transformed into handmade paintings made by a young artist from school. The format of the painting was black and white watercolours with the yellow colour of the New York cabs highlighted! The paintings adorn a large white wall today!
